Warmer weather, sunny days, and lots of time to play are ahead. <strong>Did you know that spending time outdoors in early childhood can help prevent nearsightedness (myopia)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why is this so important? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brienholdenvision.org\/news\/item\/102-time-spent-outdoors-how-effective-in-myopia-prevention-and-control.html\">Researchers<\/a> project that nearly 50% of children will be nearsighted by the year 2050. <strong>Think about that, half of our children will be nearsighted.<\/strong> The commonly held belief has been to treat nearsightedness with glasses or contacts to help the patient see better. But this is the old way. Just like other advances in medicine, we now have better treatments. <!--more-->We are learning that it is even more important to help prevent the progression of nearsightedness than we once thought. The higher the amount of nearsightedness, the greater the risks of severe eye diseases. <strong>Higher amounts of nearsightedness can lead to an increased risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma, and cataracts.<\/strong> All of these diseases can have significant and devastating effects on vision.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the exciting part: <a href=\"https:\/\/perrysburgeyedoctor.com\/myopia-control\"><strong>THERE IS HOPE!<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brienholdenvision.org\/news\/item\/102-time-spent-outdoors-how-effective-in-myopia-prevention-and-control.html\">Researchers<\/a> are showing positive ways to help prevent nearsightedness and minimize its progression. Studies show that being outdoors for an average of two hours a day can help prevent the start of nearsightedness! That\u2019s right stepping away from the screen and enjoying the outdoors is good for your eyes! Of course, make sure you apply sunscreen, are wearing your sunglasses, and are rocking your favorite hat!<\/p>\n<p>If your child does become nearsighted or has started to develop nearsightedness we can still help! Specially designed glasses, contact lens, or eye drops can help minimize the change in nearsightedness progression. This can lead to much lower amounts of&nbsp;nearsightedness and a better quality of life!<\/p>\n<p>If you have moderate to high nearsightedness you know the struggles. You know the frustration of not being able to see without glasses and\/or contact lenses. Help prevent the same fate for your child.
